PRINT FINISHES

As my style and art has evolved, I’ve become more particular about ensuring all my work is displayed on quality finishes that compliment the feel and style of photograph I am presenting.

As such, some of my most limited works are only printed with a particular finish (and may be limited to certain sizes) that best display the image.

For everything else, I tend to prefer one of three finishes;

  • Metal printing

  • Canvas framed with Tasmanian Oak

  • Metallic paper printing

  • Fine art paper printing

If you are unsure of the print finish, I have summarised the finishes below.

Metal Printing

For a more in depth explanation of metal printing, including it’s many benefits, please click on the “About Metal Prints” heading up top.

Metal printing allows for a frameless, ultramodern look. The prints allow clean edge to edge printing, and the infused colour gives a rich, vivid luminance which makes photos come to life. The prints come with a “floating frame” and appear to float elegantly on your wall and allow photos to really pop.

These prints are best displayed in darker rooms or rooms without large amounts of light (especially natural) as that tends to reflect off the vivid surface. They can also be placed in wet areas.

Canvas Prints

These prints may be best suited for the brightest areas of your house, especially where there is a lot of bright natural light.

All my canvas prints come with a Tasmanian Oak Frame. Some frame colours are set for certain prints, otherwise the options available are shown below, in the following order:

  • Ivory

  • Sand

  • Washed Grey

  • Silver Grey

  • Shadow Grey

  • Smoke

All canvas prints come with a Mirror Wrap. A mirror wrap duplicates what is on the front edge and wraps it around the sides of the canvas. This is not visible from directly in front but will be visible from the sides.

Metallic Paper Prints

This has a high contrast, high gloss finish with vibrant colours and a pearlescent shimmer. Like metal prints, it is best in areas where high amounts of reflection are less likely.

Comes framed with non-reflective glass.

Fine Art Paper Prints

A cross between glossy and matte (also called semi-gloss), this finish is the more ‘traditional’ photographic print look. It is excellent for skin tones and much better than metallic paper at reducing glare.

Comes framed with non-reflective glass.

ABOUT METAL PRINTS

Metal printing involves a heat press to infuse ink into a specially treated, ChromaLuxe aluminium metal plate. The process results in an ultra modern, high definition finished print with a true to life look.

There are many benefits of metal printing over traditional formats. The following are some of my favourite reasons for metal printing:

Durability

The process of ‘dye-sublimation’ (ie/ infusing the ink into the metal) allows the colours to last for a very long time without losing vibrancy and becoming dull. In fact, if properly kept out of direct sunlight, metal prints will last for greater than 100 years and are currently regarded as the longest lasting photo medium available and image stability is 2-4 times longer than the image stability of traditional silver photo papers.

Additionally, metal prints are scratch, stain and chemical resistant and have the added benefit of being waterproof. This means that you can display your print in most places where traditional materials are not recommended such as humid locations (E.g / bathrooms) and not worry about protecting them with glass.

They can be cleaned simply with a microfibre cloth and simple (ammonia-free) glass cleaning solution.

The metal print look

Metal printing allows for a frameless, ultramodern look. The prints allow clean edge to edge printing, and the infused colour gives a rich, vivid luminance which makes photos come to life. The prints come with a “floating frame” and appear to float elegantly on your wall and allow photos to really pop.

Environmentally better

The process of infusing ink onto the aluminium surface avoids the traditional processes of print that produce chemical wastes that often contain high levels of silver, caustic chemicals and bleaches, which may end up in our drain pipes and thus the environment.

Lightweight

Since the metal used is aluminium, prints remain lightweight even at larger print sizes. This means you can easily transport them, hang them on removable hanging strips instead of requiring nails and hooks, and easily remove your print for cleaning purposes. Care should be used on frameless metal prints not to apply too much pressure on the edges as this can cause bending of your print.

Customisable

Perhaps my favourite reason to print on metal is how flexible the whole process is. Traditional looks with white matts are easily replicated. Custom sizes are no problem. If you would like a more unique look, why not go for a circle print instead of a square/rectangle?

Overall, there is much to love about the metal print finish!

FLOATING HANGER FOR METAL PRINTS

Floating hanger

Two styles are available depending on the print size – for smaller prints there is a rigid, lightweight backing board and for larger prints a custom welded backing frame. These edges are not visible from the front of the print. Smooth edges and rubber bumpers are used to finish the product.

The floating hanger is designed to allow for clean, edge to edge printing, that appears to float ½” on your wall. The style is elegant and modern.
